A call to prepare for the second coming

Preparing for the Second Coming: Reflections on President Nelson’s Call to Action

In the October 2024 General Conference, President Russell M. Nelson, prophet and President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued a stirring call to members of the Church: Now is the time for you and for me to prepare for the Second Coming of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. His message serves as a powerful reminder that the prophesied return of the Savior is not a distant or abstract idea but an imminent event that calls each of us to action today.

This message resonates deeply with the faithful who look forward to the Second Coming with anticipation and who are urged, as President Nelson expressed, not to “miss the majesty of this moment.” His invitation is an opportunity to reflect, prepare, and participate in the gathering of Israel—a work that extends beyond borders and touches lives on both sides of the veil.

Preparing Our Hearts and Minds for the Savior’s Return

President Nelson reminded members that the time to prepare is now, underscoring that preparation involves both personal transformation and dedication to the work of the Lord. In a world of distractions and competing messages, he urged us to use the teachings from this conference as a “litmus test of what is true and what is not” over the coming months. This counsel to revisit and study the messages from Church leaders serves as a guide to spiritual fortification, helping each of us stay focused on truths that matter most.

The emphasis on preparing our hearts and minds for the Second Coming points to a vital aspect of discipleship: the need for personal and spiritual readiness. This readiness is not a sudden shift but an ongoing process of aligning our lives with the teachings of Jesus Christ. It is about building faith and resilience, strengthening our relationship with God, and preparing our hearts to recognize the Savior when He returns.

The Hastening of Temple Work: A Global Gathering

President Nelson also touched on the unprecedented pace of temple construction, linking it to the Lord’s instruction to build temples worldwide as a crucial part of preparing for the Second Coming. With 17 new temples announced in locations from Mexico and Uganda to Idaho and New Jersey, the global expansion of temples highlights the inclusive nature of the gospel and the Lord’s desire to gather His people from every corner of the earth.

The growing number of temples serves as a tangible reminder of the Lord’s love and the divine importance of temple work in uniting families across generations. Each new temple brings the blessings of covenants and ordinances closer to Church members around the world, fulfilling the prophecy that the gospel will reach every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. Temples provide sacred spaces where individuals can deepen their commitment to Christ and participate in ordinances that bless their ancestors and future generations.

In President Nelson’s words, “The blessings of the temple help to gather Israel on both sides of the veil.” Temples are more than beautiful buildings; they are instruments in God’s hands to bless individuals and families, to heal, and to bind us together in preparation for the Savior’s return.

The Gathering of Israel: A Work of Love and Unity

President Nelson’s message reflects an essential part of his ministry: the gathering of Israel. Since becoming President of the Church, he has frequently emphasized that this gathering is the most important work happening on earth today. As members engage in temple and family history work, share the gospel, and serve others, they are actively participating in this gathering, becoming instruments in the hands of the Lord.

This work invites each member to consider how they can contribute to the gathering of Israel, whether by serving in their communities, sharing the gospel, or engaging in family history efforts. Every act of love, service, and testimony-building contributes to this work. It creates a ripple effect that unites people in faith, brings souls closer to Christ, and prepares them to receive Him.

A Time of Anticipation and Sacred Urgency

President Nelson’s message is one of anticipation but also of urgency. It is a call to recognize the significance of our times and to prepare actively for the return of the Savior. For many, the signs of the times can evoke mixed emotions—hope, excitement, and perhaps even a sense of fear or anxiety. Yet, President Nelson’s words bring comfort and perspective: as we follow the Savior, we are promised His guidance and peace.

He invited us not to miss the “majesty of this moment,” reminding us that this is a sacred time in history, a time when the Lord is hastening His work, calling us to prepare ourselves and to help others come to know Him. The pace of temple construction and the emphasis on preparing for the Second Coming signal that we are living in a unique and divinely appointed time.

How Can We Heed President Nelson’s Invitation?

1. Study the Messages of Conference: President Nelson encouraged us to study the messages shared by Church leaders in this conference. By doing so, we can strengthen our understanding of gospel truths and align our lives more closely with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Reviewing and applying these teachings over the next six months can help us discern truth and navigate the complexities of the world.

2. Attend the Temple Regularly: For those who are able, frequent temple attendance offers a sacred opportunity to draw closer to God, receive personal revelation, and participate in the work of gathering Israel. President Nelson’s emphasis on temples highlights their central role in preparing for the Second Coming.

3. Engage in Family History Work: By participating in family history and temple work, we extend the blessings of the gospel to our ancestors, fulfilling the divine mandate to gather Israel on both sides of the veil.

4. Focus on Personal Preparation: Preparing for the Savior’s return is ultimately a personal journey. It means aligning our lives with His teachings, repenting, and cultivating faith, hope, and charity. As we do so, we become spiritually resilient and prepared to meet Him.

Embracing the Majesty of the Moment

President Nelson’s October 2024 address was a clarion call for every member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His message reminds us that the Savior’s return is a real and anticipated event, one that calls each of us to prepare with faith and diligence. By embracing his counsel, we can help fulfill the Lord’s work, fortify our faith, and stand ready to welcome the Savior when He comes again.

In the words of President Nelson, “I pray that we will not miss the majesty of this moment.” May we take his invitation to heart, becoming a people prepared to receive the Lord and to participate in the gathering of Israel with love, unity, and unwavering faith.
